visual studio 2010 pro install incompatibale with this version of windows

Hello.
VS 2012 pro installed successfully on windows server 2008 R2 standard.. when i ran it it gave the error, Visual Studio is incompatible with this version of windows. i cecked online, and found that patch KB_2781514 is required. when i tried to run the patch, the patch gave the follwoing error 'uodate for microsoft VS 2012 (KB2781514) has stopped responding'. Please advise how I can resolve this error.

Have you checked the Event log to see if there is a reason the patch failed?

the update had to be run locally. i was running it from a shared folder.
