Excel document shortcuts on desktop with Excel 2016

I recently downloaded the free version of Office 2016.  I have Windows 7 on my laptop and have been using Office 2007.  I created several shortcuts on the desktop to open specific Excel files.  I find that with the new Excel, these files will not open.  The Excel program opens but not the specific file that the shortcut is directed to.  Any suggestions?
P.S.  I found that this doesn't happen with the new Word 2016.  The shortcuts to specific Word files seem to work fine.
