add spacing between site and background image

I added a background image to a wordpress template.  Now all elements of the site are way to close to the edges.  I tried adding padding and/or margins to various elements but it didn't work too good. Any ideas?  This should be a simple fix but every time I try to fix it I just make matters worse.  Doesn't help that I am sick today either...  : (

I was playing with the style in the "site-container" DIV and played with these properties to get some results:

{
    width: 1024px;
    padding: 10px;
    margin: auto;
    background-color: white;  /* this in particular was needed to get the padding to be visible */
}

I increased the width to 1224px and that seemed to do the trick!

Oh no!  When I resize the site by grabbing the lower right corner, it doesn't resize properly!  Help!!!!

Try using a percentage in the width, like 65%, instead of fixed pixels. Maybe that will work for you.
