i added a transparent background (or <b>Alpha channel</b>) to the image.<br />

then i used the <b>Eraser</b> and the <b>Select</b> tools in GIMP to remove the entire background.

The marks in the dark areas are ok but can anyone help out to touch up the facial blemishes which are likely from a photo stored for many years, etc.<br />

We can not afford to buy a program for a one time photo.<br />
