String.IsNullOrEmpty in asp.net vb,net question

this is what im trying to do:

If Not String.IsNullOrEmpty(Name) OrElse Not String.IsNullOrEmpty(Email) Then

End if

But on the second one -----------> String.IsNullOrEmpty(Email)

I get an error:

500 Internal Server ErrorObject reference not set to an instance of an object.

why is that,
