Subform - Sum Totals

Experts, how do I make the subform in datasheet format, automatically sum as shown?   I have to continually choose the dropdown "Sum" for the column.   I have saved the form as shown in the pic below but it doesnt open with the column summed.

This feature leaves a lot to be desired.  If you want to ensure that the total always populates, add a footer to the subform and add a control that does the summing there.
