I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

1. open EC2 console.
2. choose Volumes under ELASTIC BLOCK STORE
3. click Create Volume and follow the screen prompts to create a volume. wait for a while until it is available online.
4. select that volume from the volume list, choose Attach Volume from Actions button.
5. at the Instance field, choose the EC2 instance running.W2K8, the click Attach.

that's it.

however, you need to RDP to your EC2 instance to make the volume available to Windows.

HI Bing,

That worked.

The only thing to watch out for is in step  3. click Create Volume  - you need to make sure it is same region as the instance.

yes, the volume must be physically located in the same region (the same physical Amazon data centre) with the EC2 instance. a reasonable "limitation". :)
