I think the best place to start is Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_intelligence

This explains the concepts behind a lot of the BI tools you find out there.  Essentially BI is simply about taking data and displaying it in a meaningful way.  BI tools not only provide that functionality but also allow users to tweak/filter the results in real-time.

I've used Qlikview for years though there are many other BI tools out there including Power BI from Microsoft and Tableau.
