SBS 2008 unable to backup since migration

I have just moved VHD files from an old server to its replacement running 2012r2 server (hyper v). The server has 3 vhd files attached, data, exchange and the main OS (c:)

The move to the new server has been smooth, until I have attempted to run a backup. In the past I've never had issues with the backup, but currently it won't even start, failing almost instantly before it starts with error "The backup of the volume has stopped before it even started running"

The event log shows these error entries below.

Please note that if i run a once off manual backup and DO NOT select the C drive, the backup will start. As soon as the C drive is selected, the backup will fail immediately.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks!
