Need help with Vista and Windows Mail
It is Windows Mail and not any other name.
Last year the ISP was changing their servers, etc. and we could no longer user our user name to login. We had to start using the entire e-mail address. While that was going on my Windows Mail from the start menu would not open. It was because the user name was not the entire e-mail address in tools > properties. We went in and confirmed that all outgoing and incoming servers settings were good. since then no problems until last Saturday.
No e-mails were received for about 5 hours. The last one received was around 1pm. No more arrived. I called ISP tech support and I do not recall taking any action, and suddenly 11 messages arrived. Sunday and Monday no problems.
Today > start > Windows Mail it opens the program like it always has and I think it had me logged in which is also normal. I should have gotten at least one message from EE such as a neglected question. I sent an e-mail to myself and it never arrived. I call tech support and 8 messages on the mail server. We try different things and check all serve settings and everything is fine.
I sent tech support an e-mail and they got it.
I can not receive mail for some reason. Tech support said my Windows Mail is not recognizing the incoming mail server settings. They could not help me any further since they showed it was not on their end. I remember from Saturday how all of sudden around 6pm here come 11 messages that had been on the server since around 1pm the same day.
Any ideas on the problem with Windows Mail?

I know Thunderbird is one alternative. Also going to the ISP website and open > view > read > send mail all day long. There is an inbox, forwarding, etc. everything needed in a mail program except it is a website.

ISP Tech support took a look at all those settings earlier today. No results.
I can send messages but not receive.
I called tech support again. I can send messages and they arrive on the other end. Since I can login to "their" e-mail server through their website, then my user name and all server settings are normal.

Vista will only be supported for a few months more, I suggest you use the Web-Browser for email and rather than trying to look for a "fix" get a newer OS for your PC, or if it is too old for a modern OS, get a new PC. On new OS's you won't have the same mail client anyway, so there isn't much point in keeping on using windows Vista Mail.
Whenever I encounter such an error, I try multiple settings. Sometimes everything appears to be correct but needs to be updated. Like SSL/TLS, Ports, Authentication methods etc.
Are you using incoming mail server settings w.r.t your domanin or host?
like abc@company.com or abc@xyzhosting.com. There should be alternate settings. Maybe you can try it.

There is a Windows Mail Utility Tool which can repair the database. I have already used it to compact and defrag.
No result.
I can not afford to lose the hundreds of message in the program by using the repair tool.
Not sure if that might be an end result so I have not tried to repair the database of the mail program.
What mail program comes with Windows 7?
Obaid
All I know is that Windows Mail and all other e-mail programs such as Outlook Express and others receive the new messages, if any, from the ISP's mail server. All settings on their end are correct. I can check my e-mail from the ISP's webmail site. Since I can log in there normally they say the settings are correct. They are tech supoprt for over 100,000 users so they have done all they can.
Host and domain have no meaning to me as far as using the ISP mail server and Windows Mail.

The messages are not on the ISP mail server. The only ones there are the ones that Windows Mail is not properly retrieving.
100's of stored e-mail in Windows Mail. The server from the ISP only has the message that was just received from EE.
If you can see all your mails and address books there, you don't really have to do anything............that is not the way this ISP mail server and Windows Mail work. WM is opened and it gets them from the ISP mail server. It is failing to do that. As more messages are received from EE they are being stored on the web mail sever until I open their website and view them from there.

Windows Mail is failing to retrieve new messages from the ISP mail server the same way as Thunderbird would do it.
It's not more complicated than that except for the cause of the problem. I've used this mail program with the same ISP for over 8 years. The POP settings, etc. are all correct.

The same thing happened Saturday. No e-mails after around 1pm. Then suddenly around 5pm here come 11 new messages.
It worked fine on Sunday and Monday and Tuesday.
The ISP can not change their end of it for one user out of 100,000. All the settings in WM > tools > properties > server > are all correct.
Their website for e-mail works very well. I have two Outlook accounts and Microsoft has ruined Hotmail with all the changes. Outlook very poor e-mail. Same for Yahoo. Google we do not want Google to control more than they already control.
If WM does not get a fix we'll have to use Thunderbird.

You'll have to move to thunderbird anyway very soon, or use Webmail, as Vista will be dead in a couple of Months as I already mentioned.
Gmail and Hotmail were only examples.
Have you checked whether your mail provider supports IMAP? Most email Providers today support both.

Nick,
I'd first try to rectify the problem area. Can you use another email client just to verify that WM is the really having problem?
You can use Thunderbird or a phone app.

I have sent myself an e-mail using Windows Mail. It arrives in my mailbox on the webmail site which is what they call it.
I can send myself an e-mail using the webmail and as soon as I click send, I log out. That way it stays on the server as a new message waiting for Windows Mail to retrieve it. Which it does not.
If I do not log out immediately it will arrive on the mail server while I am logged in to their webmail site. Their webmail site is one of the best e-mail programs I've ever used. But their servers could have some event and messages stored there would vanish.
I see nothing wrong accept Windows Mail is not correctly accessing the mail server.

nick - try installing mailwasher - and check if it sees your mails
then use the process mail knob - it should open your windows mail and download the mails
that is how i work on windows 7 with windows Mail - and it works fine

what is mailwasher supposed to do? How will it affect the many messages already received and stored in my WM?
Is mailwasher just Thunderbird with a spam filter?
Our ISP already gives us a spam filter and it collects all of them and sends out a dashboard once a week, so we can go there and glance over what it has determined to be junk.

i suggets it because it suggests another way of working with your mail; and it does not affect anything on server or pc

I have alternatives for mail like the ISP website which is very friendly as an e-mail program. Or Thunderbird as alternative #2.
As you can see mailwasher could not get to the server either.
I just spoke to ISP tech support for the 3rd time. The fact that my user name and password gets me logged into their mail program = there is a problem with Windows Mail. The errors I get are not on their side.
Account: 'mail.comporium.net', Server: 'mail.comporium.net', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR [AUTH] Authentication failed.', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92
They said try Thunderbird and if that fails, call them back. Their own webmail program from their website works far better than Thunderbird. It works better than any e-mail program I've ever had except: Outlook Express and Windows Mail.
Going to Windows 7 in coming months forces some change.

I called tech support again and asked about IMAP and they knew about it but no a solution. I do not think the program will be fixed any time soon since I do not know the cause. I'll go with the Windows Mail problems link.

I've been opening Windows Mail each day. Close the login window, get the error, but use it to access old e-mails or to send new ones easier. Today I logged in and it worked fine and retrieved all e-mails on the server since October 12.
Any post question ideas on why it suddenly works? Could it be on the ISP end and they were not telling us or did not know it was on their end in some way?

Well as soon as the multiple messages arrived from as far back as Oct. 12, I sent a couple messages to myself but they never arrived in Windows Mail. I then went to the ISP's mail program and there they were.
So, something has off and on issues and it may be the ISP and it may be Windows Mail.
Their tech support told us that because we can log in successfully to their site it proves that their end is not the issue.
We have Windows 7 so we have to make changes it seems. But I think there is a way to activate Windows Mail in Windows 7, as it seems to be in there but not enabled.

I don't think there's a problem with the Windows Mail Client. Frequent Server changes definitely change server settings for incoming and outgoing email.
Please login to the CPanel of your website and verify correct server settings. If your host has changed the hosting package, you might need to update name servers on your domain as well.
