Can't seem to figure out how to get rid of the tan square to the left of the navigation bar.  I would like it to be dark brown like the rest of the nav bar #453535.

Hi,

Please change this class to add !important in front of background-color like below:

change in "css/screen_styles.css" line number 43
.nav_container {
    width: 100%;
    max-width: 990px;
    margin: 0px auto;
    background-color: #453535 !important;
    font-size: 1.2em;
}
