Looking for an overview of data presentation techniques

My company is moving into more BI/dashboard presentation and I'm seeing a lot of things created that are much too confusing or that use the wrong types of visuals to convey the message they're after, or cases where people cram as much information onto a single dashboard as possible (and it's not possible to tell what to focus on).

I'm wondering if there's a course or set of webinars available that I can refer to people to help them understand effective data presentation. I'm thinking something that can convey:

- Simplicity of presentation (less is more)
- Picking the right visuals
- How to display trending effectively
- Interactivity that's not overwhelming

I'm sure there's a whole field of material available, but I'm hoping for just a 1-2 hour primer that can get people headed down the right path of creating dashboard layouts that are effective and not overwhelming. The tool isn't the issue here - it's the choice of what to display.

I didn't receive any expert responses, but thought I'd post this so that future searchers found it. It seems that what I'm looking for is called "Data Journalism" and knowing that, there are a number of courses you can go through online that cover this subject area.

One I found that looked promising (especially since we're leaning towards PowerBI) is one specifically using that tool:

https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/datajournalism/courses/

That said, it would apply to any tool you wanted to use since it covers the concepts. Enjoy!
