java set up

When i type C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 8.0\bin\startup.bat i get the message Neither the JAVA_HOME or JRE_HOME environment is defined,


I am totally new to JAVA and i am just installing INSTALLING TOMCAT ON YOUR MACHINE

type in
SET JAVA_HOME=<path to your jdk main dir>
SET JRE_HOME=<path to your jre main dir (typically the above plus "\jre">

and try again if it works, put those into system variables (Windows+Pause/Break, advanced settings, environment variables, System variables and add above two there)
