You shouldn't have to register for an IMAP account. IMAP is an Email protocol you use for receiving Email to a client mail application like Thunderbird. POP3 is another such protocol. Most modern Mail hosting companies include IMAP as one of their services, for example GMAIL, Hotmail etc. You just need to follow their instructions to configure your email client to receive the messages via IMAP.

It's similar to GMX. The free version only includes POP, while the paid for versions also include IMAP. that's one reason I only used Webmail when I was using GMX, as then the protocol doesn't matter.
