You need to change from IMAP to POP3. That is why you have an OST file.

You would have to download the mail first and here is a WiKi article to help you with that.

I use the recommended link from aol, https://help.aol.com/articles/how-do-i-use-other-email-applications-to-send-and-receive-my-aol-mail to setup imap. it looks like aol is using imap instead of pop3.

It said here that .pst is used for pop and imap, https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Introduction-to-Outlook-Data-Files-pst-and-ost-6d4197ec-1304-4b81-a17d-66d4eef30b78. So why is my outlook file .ost?

AOL uses IMAP.  But you can download emails to a PST if you want. IMAP is meant to hold emails on the server however.

The problem that I am tryingto fix is why when I setup my aol account in Outlook, it generated the ost file and not pst. That is what I want to fix. I want a pst file. Thx

OST is a just a cache of IMAP. You need to set up IMAP to download a PST if AOL will allow that. Follow the WiIk article.

Dear Ieblanc

I agree with John Hurst, you can follow his suggested solution. Continuing the discussion, I would like add few more info on OST to PST conversion. You can try manual solution to migrate OST file into PST format by following the below steps:

1. Open MS Outlook
2. Go to File menu.
3. Select the “Import and Export” wizard
4. Click on “Export to a file” option from the list, and then click Next button.
5. Select Personal File Folder (.pst) and then click Next button.
6. Select the items to be export & Click on parent root and check the Include sub-folders option.
7. Browse and select the target folder for saving the email items.
8. Now click on Finish.

But, if you want to convert OST file into PST quickly and safely, then you can move on any third party application. I would like to suggest you one of the best OST to PST Converter tool on the behalf of my personal experience to export OST into PST format without any data loss.

Thanks & Regards

I tried what John suggested but I don;t have the option to save my email with its content. It looks like I will go with the OST to PST route. Now can I merge 2 PST files to one? Thx

You would need a third party tool to convert the OST to PST first. You cannot just merge an OST file to PST.

You can use Stellar Technologies:
http://www.stellarinfo.com/gdc/convert-ost-to-pst.php?gclid=CJuj_eP_uc8CFQanaQodf1wFCw

or
