Bios update is not supported using rbu method
Hi,
I have a client's Dell PoweredgeT430 that I inherited from a previous IT guy.  I am trying to update the BIOS and get this error.  Any suggestions?
My impetus is the fans are going full speed after a recent reboot.
Server is running Windows Server 2012.

Thanks!

BIOS update should run under Win2012, you're not trying to run it from within a VM are you?

Hi andyalder,
Correct. I merely downloaded the BIOS update package from the support.dell.com website, double clicked and launched the installer.  Shortly after I get the error message.
I even ran the BIOS installation file as an Administrator.

Does the BIOS update documentation state that it addresses this specific problem?  If it does not, I strongly advise against updating the BIOS unless you have a spare server ready to replace this one if the flash fails.  A server is not an individual user PC and when this operation fails, it causes endless grief.

If fans are running overspeed, imo it is more likely there is a temperature issue and that possibility should be investigated first.

Thank you for your input Dr Klahn.  Its' only in a 5 user environment and they do almost everything on the cloud as it is.  The server isn't a under a lot of load.

Again. Merely restarting the server is what triggered the fans on high.  If you have a better solution to address this please let me know.

Here's a link to the download: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=2KYJY&fileId=3445763724&osCode=WS8R2&productCode=poweredge-t420&languageCode=en&categoryId=BI
I used the latest download available. Clearly states Windows...

I must not have uploaded the picture of the image.  Here's what I am getting.

The server boots and says iDRAC not setup.  Does this mean that the server is actually a VM and this is why I can't upgrade the BIOS?  Is there another reason why the fans are at 100%?

Again, the fans started maxing out after I did a hard shut-down of the server.

andyadler, I am attaching the boot up including the iDRAC error.  When I go into iDRAC I get the message: iDRAC is not ready

You can try taking the CMOS battery out and leaving it for 5 minutes but unfortunately that rarely fixes this problem and as the iDRAC is integrated on the motherboard then that needs to be replaced unless you jusr put up with the noise and the lack of remote management. T430 is fairly recent model though, it may be just inside warranty period.

Thanks for your reply! I'll get on the horn with Dell support.  I believe it is under warranty

Hi angelIII,
andyadler did answer the question correctly.  The issue was the motherboard and it had to be replaced.

Servers are computing devices that are similar to desktop computers in that they have the same basic components, but are significantly different in size, configuration and purpose. Servers are usually accessed over a network, and many run unattended, without a computer monitor, input device, audio hardware or USB interfaces. Many servers do not have a graphical user interface (GUI), and are configured and managed remotely. Servers typically include hardware redundancy such as dual power supplies, RAID disk systems, and ECC memory, along with extensive pre-boot memory testing and verification. Critical components might be hot swappable, and to guard against overheating, servers might have more powerful fans or use water cooling.
