I have seen both written but am unsure if they mean the exact same thing.

I assume one is the filename and the other is the language.

They are exactly the same.

Angular comes in different versions
1.x prior to 1.5
1.5 - a bridging version between 1.x and 2

But all referred to as AngularJS
