Looking for a Dameware mini remote control alternative

We use Dameware to view and manage users desktops.   The software is great, but has gotten very expensive.  We are non-profit.

What are others using that is as good as Dameware?

DameWare has the pro to be able to install itself remotely. This can be mimicked (in case alternative software does not allow for such) by using psExec (from www.sysinternals.com) to start the server part remotely, but that can get tricky.

VNC is often used in free or paid distributions.
MS Remote Assistance (= RDP shadowed) can be used for on-demand help.
RDP is used if you do not require to access the current users desktop while they are logged in.
TeamViewer can get costly, and uses at least an online license server.
One of our clients uses RAdmin with appreciation.
And there a lot more of competing with TeamViewer.
