I have a MAC that I just installed Snow Leopard.

When I run updates and it tries to install: OS 10.6.8 , when it restarts it stays on wallpaper screen - no status bar.

How can I fix this?

There are several possibilities.  The Status bar may be outside the viewable area due to a screen configuration issue.  You can check by pressing any Finder keyboard command and see if a window or dialog appears .. for example CMD+N will create a new folder
If you press CMD+comma it will open the System Preferences and you can look at the display settings.
If neither of these commands work then it looks like your core OSX installation is not correct and damaged and a re-install is probably the best bet.

1. Is your system a CLEAN install of OSX 10.6 from a DVD with a system update to 10.6.8?
2. Before upgrading to 10.6.8 was the status bar and OSX working fine?
3. Do you have system backups in place or can you repeat the installation process for 10.6?

If 2 == YES .. then I'd be recommending a re-install as indicated in 3    ... IF you cannot get into the system preferences and modify the display settings.

Others may have alternative suggestions if you want to wait and see .. I think the issue is more than a simple repair of permissions or system check will address.

I selected More Details on the check for updates .. selected all but OS update .. they installed ok

Then after the restart I selected the OS update and it worked.

All good - - Thanks,
