We're looking to get a gift for a graduate.  we think he'd like a stirling engine.  Don't want one that needs a flame  but rather the ones that run when put on top of a cup of coffee.

But there's wild price differences.  Any knowledge of how good the cheaper ones are?  Do you need to spend almost $100 for reliability?

Some alternate possibilities that can be enjoyed all the time, not just when fired up ...

A Galileo thermometer, with or without the bogus Fitzroy storm glass.  The larger ones are particularly impressive.

A radiometer, either stand or hanging.  The hanging ones come in sizes up to 4" in diameter.
