Server 2008 Software that Gives Network Bandwidth Usage Reports and Alerts When Network is Down

Hello,

I am looking for a software that provides information as to how individual clients are using bandwidth on the network.  I would also like to be able to have something running that will give me information as to when Internet access goes down such as communication to an ISP gateway.  I would like to be able to have this machine up at all times for monitoring.

Try solarwinds and PRTG monitor.
Manage Engine NetFlow Analyzer works as well.  Try MRTG as well.
Thanks for the mention nitenKumar!

PRTG would indeed be a good fit for your needs.  It's a Windows software that monitors all aspects of your network (bandwidth, switches, servers, databases, ...).  It's for both real-time monitoring with alerting about problems, and for historical reporting.

We offer a free 30-day trial version with full functionality and an unlimited number of sensors.  After the 30 days it automatically reverts to our freeware 100-sensor version (free forever).  To get a very rough estimate of how many sensors you would need:  on average our customers use 5-10 sensors per device.  (What is a sensor?)

For monitoring bandwidth, in particular, you would want to use the SNMP Traffic Sensor and one of the Flow sensors (netflow, sflow, jflow or IPFIX, depending on which one your switches support.  The SNMP sensor will show you how much bandwidth is in use, and the flow sensors will show you what's in the traffic (based on source/destination IP, TCP protocol, etc).

If you'd like to get an idea of what this would look like before installing the software, check out these two videos:
- Bandwidth monitoring with SNMP and WMI
- Bandwidth monitoring with NetFlow and Packet Sniffing
