Vendor ID 0F18 has not been assigned. Are you sure that this is not another Intel device which is actually vendor ID 8086?

Thanks to Intel, it is no longer necessary to endure that tedium. The Intel Driver Update Utility which is linked on the page previously cited determines the chipset and if it is necessary to install or update drivers it asks for permission to do so.
i Always prefer the drivers from the manufacturer, so yes - post the laptop model
here's how i handle such problems :
if you have unknown devices in device manager, you can use this procedure to identify them :
1- visit the motherboard manufacturers support site, for downloading drivers
2- use windows update >optional updates to find them
3- Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information.
Now select "Components" and highlight "Problem Devices".
All hardware devices with a driver problem will be listed here.
Make a note of the first line of the PNP Device ID line of the entry. It will show a Vendor number and a Device number (VENxxxxDEVxxxx) both four digits long.
Look up those numbers here: http://www.pcidatabase.com/index.php
This will tell you the manufacturer and the chip number.
Check the manufacturer's website first or google them - or post them here
4- If your LAN is running, you can also use windows update> optional drivers, or use a driver update software

Just visit the HP web-site, go to the Support page, enter your laptop model number, select the drivers download option, select the OS you need the drivers for, and they will show up.

I just want to be able to get the USB ports to work

Thanks ---
As I already said, just visit the HP site to get the drivers. USB drivers are usually part of the chipset, which are the most important drivers anyway and should be the first that you install, provided there is one available for your PC and OS.
does HP offer to downgrade to windows 7 ? i could not find any article, so i fear it is not supposrted by HP
this means you're on your own to find drivers
