New pc and old printer and can not print
We added a printer and Windows 7 installed the driver. All print jobs end up in errors. We had to get a 25 pin to USB cable to use the new system. When the cable was plugged into the tower we got what we expected. A signal sent to the printer and it printed a blank page.
Now when we try to print a document from notepad the print job sits in the queue as an error.
We have 4 USB devices plugged into the tower. All the USB ports appear to be black. All the cables are white. Two are the mouse and keyboard so white USB cable into black USB port does work. Except these print errors.
Printer is an HP895Cse.
The new printer cable was rather tight to plug into the parallel cable. It is the right 25 pin and with some force it did connect. Then when the USB end of the cable was plugged into the tower, there was communication between system and printer.
Any ideas?
It would not be desirable to have two system where one is for printing.
From this image we tried "find printer" and it showed "network."
I can switch back to the other pc, Vista, and see if it prints. I think it will > the new 25 pin to USB cable is not the problem.

It appears to me that the 895Cse is no longer supported. Where did you get a driver for it?
I agree with Gary CAse that a network connection would be preferred (and it's easy to do!). But there will still be the driver issue.

Agree drivers are almost certainly an issue for any version of Windows beyond Windows 7 => but there ARE drivers for this printer available directly through Windows Update for Windows 7 (NOT on the HP site).
If you get it connected via an actual parallel port (either via an add-in card or a print server ... the print server is a better choice, because then it's not PC-dependent) it should work fine.

The cable is the issue for whatever reason. I went back to my Vista and two print jobs would not advance out of the queue. I removed the USB cable and connected the 25 pin cable to the pc and the print jobs completed.
Fred:
Windows 7 retrieved the driver from where ever it gets them.
It had Microsoft XPS as the default. I added the 895 and it became the default.
efrimpol:
So why are you sending the print jobs to LPT1?
.............That is a good question I think and may be the problem?
pgm:
That link shows all the steps I took. It does not seem to say the 895 won't work with W7.
That link also shows the ports and the one at the bottom is "virtual printer port for USB. I do not remember if that was highlighted or not.
Overnight I wondered about the two drives. I have a C and an F. I wondered on which drive did the driver go.
Gary:
Windows 7 got the driver. I did not get it myself from HP.
-----------------
USB port sounds like the problem? I had it set on LPT-1 ??
Here are the fine print on the cable:
Changing the post from LPT to USB did not work. The cable is the issue.
My printer has two type connectors, parallel and the one in this photo. I do have a cable for that straight to USB001.
However the driver process never ends. It's been going 20 minutes. I can not click on close or the X to stop the effort tp install the driver software. I'll have to turn the system off to stop it.
Q: Why is it not finding the driver for the USB to ...... port on the back of the printer as seen in the top photo?

See the two photos above. The device driver installation finally completed.
Forget Windows 7 I'm working with a Vista. My printer has two types of connectors on the back. I took a cable from an F380 AIO and plugged that into the 895 printer and the other end (USB) into the tower and it will not print.
So, that type of connection fails to print and the adapter cable I bought does not work either.

Now back to the Windows 7:
Someone asked if I had pci or pcie. Which do I have from the photo below?

Those are standard PCI ports.

Then a $11.99 card from Newegg would solve it.
Or the same card from a local shop for $5.00.
With other options, I'm not seeing how to connect the computer(s) to a device that has multiple ports.

I think you are talking about the printer driver.
Printer, right click, Printer Properties, Ports tab.
The port used should be enabled (tick mark) and could be printer or USB.

If you have a standard USB cable (square on one end for the printer and regular USB for the computer) than it should print. The printer USB may be defective.
If you don't completely remove old installs of this printer from the computer then anything you observe ending with "it doesn't work" is suspect and can lead you down a path that's not productive.
Agree with Fred r.e. you should remove all of the old installs before trying a new setup.
I'm surprised the USB connection on the printer isn't working -- it's apparently an old v1 USB port and the HP specs show that it's for a "USB-connect Macintosh", but I'd still think it'd be "seen" with a standard USB port. Are you connecting this to a v2 or a v3 USB port? [v3 ports are blue; v2 are black]?
In any event, I'd think a PCI parallel port card is your best solution.

I removed the 895, 895(1) and 895(2).
I unplugged the USB cable from the back of the printer. The system reacted and the noise told me that a USB device had been unplugged. I plugged in the parallel cable to the printer and pc and it prints fine.
There was a Youtube video and the image is above. My printer accepts both types of cables. But when trying the USB cable there are printing errors.
So I am back to the parallel to the USB cable purchased does not work on either computer.
I can buy another one from another source or look for a used pci pci, or other options. The local shop might pay me to take one.
Couldn't the parallel port from one pc be removed and inserted in the other one?
Gary:
If they are blue I can not tell. They all look black on both the Vista and the Windows 7 systems.
The USB cable did come from a newer HP printer.

"... Couldn't the parallel port from one pc be removed and inserted in the other one? " ==> Only if it's being provided by an add-in card and you have the same slot type available on the other computer ... e.g. a PCI slot.
But if the printer has a parallel port on the motherboard, then clearly you can't "remove it" :-)
But if the printer has a parallel port on the motherboard, then clearly you can't "remove it" :-)
... By the way, there's a reasonable chance that the motherboard on your computer actually HAS a parallel port header, but it's not being "brought out" to the rear panel for use. IF that's the case, all you need is an adapter that connects to the header and provides a parallel port connector on a rear bracket for you to use. e.g. http://www.quill.com/startech-plate25f16lp-16-low-profile-parallel-port-header-cable-adapter-w-bracket-db25f-to-idc26/cbs/51532488.html?hidedisruptive=1&cm_mmc=SEM_PLA_Tech_51532488&mcode=SEM_PLA_Tech_51532488&gclid=CLnt07yq788CFYUyaQodvroK9A
These cost as much as an add-in parallel port card, but they have the advantage that they're using an actual chipset-provided parallel port. To determine if you have one of these, you need to look closely at the motherboard -- or post the exact make/model of the motherboard and we can look at the specs.
I found a picture that shows what this header looks like -- notice the "LPT" label on the bottom left part of this picture -- if you have a connector like that, then all you need is the bracket that lets you provide a connecion to it.

The Vista is not an add-on. It's tied to the motherboard in some way.
The Windows 7 does not have a parallel port header. I'll go to the local shop Monday and see if they have a PCI port for the W7. I might guess that not many people are looking for one. They have boxes of used parts on display. I should have gone there for a cable and did not think about it.
I hoped the adapter that I bought would have worked. Not sure why it does not. Refund is automatic.
They have all you want on Ebay for less than $1.75 and free shipping if I want to try another brand.
As well as the USB cable from the other HP printer. I think that cable is standard and fits many HP models.

I removed the 895, 895(1) and 895(2).By itself that's likely not enough.
Did you follow the instructions for *complete* removal???

There are 5 other printers on this system.
--------------------
I half way skipped over #1. I'll do that tomorrow for the 895.
-------------------------- ---------- ----
Let me on Monday check into another parallel - USB adapter and / or parallel port for the W7 PCI slot.
From Viki's comments, I'd hope to avoid having to download the revouninstaller since it could remove things I want to keep. i need to keep printer HP 500 to compliment the 895.

On second thought, perhaps it's good that you try other things before completely removing the driver for the 895. That's because it's native to Windows and you might have another task to replace that one.

The simplest solution is a replacement adapter. They are $1.68 and free shipping on Ebay or a few dollars at the local shop.
It would take a few weeks to try the $1.68 one.
I can also replace the current parallel cable from the AB switch to the pc. That might solve the tight fit of the connectors. I have many extra cables.

It looks like the issue is resolved. I tried a new parallel cable from AB switch to the new parallel to USB adapter. No luck.
I replaced the white USB cable that runs from the printer to a USB port with another similar cable. The white one came from an F380. That failed to print in previous tries. It was replaced with a black one from an unknown printer. It prints. It needs an extension to reach so now I can print using the 895 and the Windows 7 pc.
This removed the AB switch and I used that to go back and forth, as needed which was rarely, between the 895 and the 710C.
So, this adapter will be returned for a refund. The 710 does not have a USB cable so if that printer is needed, I guess I would plug in the parallel cable leaving the AB switch.

One person gave a link about the printer being too old. That was not the case. The printer in the photo is not mine. That came from a youtube video. It showed the square connector cable and by chance the 895 had that type in addition to the parallel. It failed with a F380 USB cable but works with a black USB cable from a box of misc. cables = unknown brand. I went with Fred due to the volume of information for now or the future.
No need now for a new adapter or a print server or a parallel port for the Windows 7.
