User using an ISP email service which he downloads onto Outlook 2007.

He went on holiday for two weeks.

For that exact holiday period of 2 weeks worth of emails have disappeared.

I have asked him to login to Mail2Web. All his emails are there except for this 2-week period.

The user claims they have not been downloaded onto any other device.

Any ideas where they might have went to?

Sounds like someone logged into that account, read the mail over that period, and deleted it after reading it.

Since the web mail shows that mail has been deleted (a) it is not likely an Outlook issue and (b) I agree with the above that someone must have accessed it.

User using an ISP email service which he downloads onto Outlook 2007.

What kind of email account setup? IMAP, POP or Exchange?

Have the user setup Autoresponder for the vacation period?

If yes, logon to webmail and check whether the user has mistakenly setup an email forwarder to another email address instead of Autoresponder.

There are two types of email forwarders, one is to leave a copy of emails in mail server while doing the forwarding and the other is to NOT to leave a copy of emails in mail server.

If still no go, it is the problem of the hosting companty.

I would add one more question:

Did the user access or attempt to access their email in any way while on vaca?

Any rules set to that account?
Any chance user did not receive any emails that period? (slim chance, but had to ask :) )

Also could you try to search for the missing email using the 'search all outlook items' option?  In some cases, if you have a category associated with it that didn't exist in Outlook (you may have added it from your phone for example), these messages wont show up. When category is removed the missing emails show up in the inbox!

Another issue that pops into my mind, is did you upgrade from Office 2010 to 2013?
In some cases, such an upgrade somehow may stop using your ost file and create a new one.
You may need to create a new account and resync.

Now that you have confirmed that it is a POP account, I will ask this again:

Did the user access or attempt to access their email in any way while on vaca?

If they did, they could have easily pulled the mail off the server. See Sajid's post for just one example of this but it could have also happened on anything else, like a misconfigured mobile device or a web client.

user claims no but with so many devices floating around his office, I would not be surprised if it was a tablet or an old phone that he only uses while on holiday.

Since the emails were not in web mail, I do not think it is a POP or Outlook problem. Somebody probably accessed the email account.

No conclusive resolution to this case I'm afraid.

My suspicion is that the user had this email account set-up on some other device which downloaded the emails during his vacation period and then he forgot about them.

Thank you to everyone who contribute - your input was much appreciated.

There is no mystery. Someone, somehow deleted the mail and it is gone.
