Excel 2013 - pdf hyperlink "No Program is Registered ..."

Using MS Excel 2013
Has links to open word document containing links to open pdf files.
When I select the hyperlinks in MS Excel (2013) I receive the following error:
"No Program is Registered to open this file"

please advice

I'm guessing this is on Windows 10? I think that's the message when you haven't got the file extension or file type associated with an application.

To open a pdf,  you probably want Adobe Reader. If it's not installed, install it, or an equivalent app. If it is installed, then open the start menu and type assoc (this does a search) and you should see an option found called "Choose a default app for each type of file". Choose that, and update the application for the .pdf type.
