Printing issues with an HP 1310 All in One printer-scanner-copier

The printer began to get uncommon results when printing or copying. He had two color cartridges and two black. I refilled one of the black and a few weeks later the resulting printed document suggested that the cartridge was low on ink. I took that one back and refilled again. In the meantime he tried to print using his other black cartridge and one of the color.

He got confusing results. His printer does not let you choose color or black so his has "black in grayscale" and "grayscale" which is alien to me.

He got an e-mail last night and he printed it out. The result is below.
The heading is normal black.
The text of the body of the e-mail is the same as we have been getting when trying all combinations of his 4 cartridges when using his pc and his printer.
Why would it not print the text in black?

What you see looks purple after scanned with my scanner but the original was much lighter purplish color but you could read it. On that last line "let me know" the bottom of the letters are red-pink.

This seems to verify that the black ink cartridge is not empty.

Is the printer the issue or any of the 4 cartridges (2 black and 2 color)

I refilled one of the black  <-- It appears that inferior refill ink has caused the issue.

What about the other black that was not refilled and the two color that have not been refilled.

That email in the photo was normal black except for the body of the message.

hdhondt,
I'll try that and it is Thunderbird the mail program from he printed.

But back on Monday we printed from Word and also used the copy feature and printed from another website. None came out black and his 1310 printer preferences are not clear. My printer gives me a choice between black or color. His does not have a color choice, only grayscale or black with grayscale.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a 1350 printer where I could test all his 4 ink cartridges but there is a paper jam error, though there is no visible jam, and it won't print. I watched numerous videos about paper jam errors, as well as one from HP and the error remains.

Here is what I see in his printers preferences.

I do not see anything abnormal in the printer settings above.

There is no choice of black and white / or color.

Here is what mine looks like and my 895 gives me a clear choice of color or black.

On his I do not know how to print black or color. His is a newer model I think being a 1310 so not sure why it does not have color options.
Unless his printer automatically detects if the photo is 100% solid red or just a few lines of black text.

One issue is we have 4 HP inks 2 black and 2 color and we are having trouble testing them because he is getting various printing results. I wanted to test all 4 of them on my 1350 but I get a paper jam error when there is no paper jam.
We will be testing his printer again 4pm today.

Below is what I see in my printer and what I hoped to see in his settings.

I saw no add-on tool.

I can try this tomorrow or Sunday: In Thunderbird, try setting the message display as Plain Text or Simple HTML, from View -> Message Body As. If the Printing Tools add-on is installed, try disabling it.

The fix turned out to be a combination of user-fixer errors that worked themselves out overnight. There was a test page stuck in the queue, it would not print anything, the hardware was not in the program list, etc.

Upon reboot today, the printer is showing up in the program list. He tried to pint a sheet of music and the black was good for 1/3 page and then faded out.......faded out is to me any way an indicator that the black is low on ink = good because we needed a status on the 4 cartridges.
It also printed yellow and blue normally since he highlights several words on the sheet.
Why it printed the top of an e-mail and then the rest was purple not sure.

So all cartridges are good though they may be low on ink. Drivers, etc. are not a problem.
