Firefox uses WAY too much memory. How can I limit the memory that Firefox uses?

When i first start firefox, the the CPU usage is over 50%.  After a few minutes it goes back down to 1%.

Using Task Manager, I sort the processes by Memory usage:

Firefox @ 237,080 K bytes
Svchost @ 67,132 K bytes
Outlook @ 48,176 K bytes

Anytime I go back to my home page, which is www.google.com, CPU usage goes over 50% and the memory usage shoots way up.

What can I do to limit the memory usage of Firefox?

I have already disabled all add-ons, cleared the history, uninstalled the software, deleted everywhere the word "firefox" appears on the C Drive, deleted all user profiles, rebooted the computer, reinstalled Firefox.  The memory issues return.

Thanks for your help!

XP? Who still uses XP? That is a dead, unsupported OS no one should still be using, particularly not when browsing the web!!!
rindi... you've probably been wrong before.  Besides... Microsoft is still trying to steal Windows 7 from me and make it Windows 10.  I have to keep something that still works.
I don't see how m$ is trying to steal Windows 7. Windows 7 is still being supported and works fine, as does Windows 10. But XP has been dead and out of support since 2014. We're close to the end of 2016 now! It is really foolish still using OS's that have no support and security updates, particularly if you use them in connection with the Internet.
You should try reading the news and checking the updates that Microsoft is trying to install in Windows 7.

I also have a car that is many years out of warranty.  The government and the auto makers would like me to get rid of it too.   But it still works ok and I can't afford a newer one.

I make my living using Windows XP and I'm not going to stop doing that either.  I also have a Windows 3.1 system that still makes me money.  It would cost over $10,000 to replace that machine and the software on it.

You've expressed your viewpoint many times already.  But your opinion is almost useless in my situation.  So I think it is foolish for you to continue saying the same thing over and over.
Your usage is not unusual.
I have about 50 tabs open and ff is using about 420 mb
You need more memory or reduce the number open tabs by bookmarking them locally.
(bookmax.net is a nice online bookmarking service if you need one)

I highly recommend that you install the free Session Manager addon.
You can save all your present tabs with a chosen name and close the tabs you don't need now.
You can save as many sets of tabs as you want.
You can merge (append) sets of tabs.

It's also great for getting your tabs back after a crash/power outrage

I usually have only 1 tab open in Firefox.

I have two computers:  1 XP and 1 Windows 7.  Because I have a lot of important software on the XP computer, I use it more than the Windows 7 computer.

Firefox running on the XP machine uses between 2000 K and 3000 K of memory.
Firefox running on the Windows 7 computer uses around 1007 K (which concurs with Dave Baldwin's comment).

Though as Dr. Klahn has mentioned, I could drop back to earlier versions, which is very inviting, and I would not mind going backup to version 20, but then, security issues could arise in the future.

As Rindi said, only the current versions with security updates are safe to use.

So, switching to the Windows 7 computer (which as the latest FF and all the updates) as my primary computer for viewing things on the web seems to be the best choice.  However, I will not give up my XP computer just in case something happens to the Windows 7 computer.

Thanks Eirman for the tip on Session Manager.
