I wonder if AWS provides support for one application running on AWS to communicate with another application asynchronously?

There are a number of services within AWS that you can leverage to accomplish that sort of thing.

The easiest to get going pretty quickly:
Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS) - Post 'messages' to a queue for another process to look at and act upon.
AWS Lambda - Allows you to trigger code to run

Another option is SNS - Simple Notification Service.
Difference on the application level between SQS and SNS is that SQS is a queue, where one application pushes and the other has to pull.

SNS on the other hand actively tries to deliver the notification, and supports a REST-like interface to deliver.
