ASKER

shouldnt it book from USB or on board CD drive?

i can try a USB stick but is this the right smart start file i downloaded from HP smartstart-8.70-0-x64.zip
The first thing you should do is reboot and enter the BIOS (System Setup) menu, from there you should check the boot order, if CD/DVD is first you're good to go.

What may be the issue of not booting is that the SmartStart media of yours is not well written (for example it was written in very high speed and this many times is problematic).

AFAIK you can select to boot from CD/DVD during the BIOS POST procedure, keep an eye on the F-Keys prompts.
thanks George,

Can you tell me how to get in to BIOS i am new to this so need a bit of details please :(

If you aren't used to Server BIOS environments don't be alarmed, take your time and read carefully, also they have great and meaningful help for every option.
Good luck!
I dont have server 2011, and HP is not installing anything do i have to install something else first to install 2016 server?
Yes you must have the original media (dvd) with a suitable license key.
But, you must also have your server updated accordingly (bios, firmwares etc) and also check in the compatibility matrix in HP's site that your model is compatible with Server 2016.
However, this is another question you are posting.
I believe that your issue of not booting has been resolved right?
Yes you are right.
Cool
Thanks for accepting my answer!
I'm glad I've been helpful!
And because you are starting your journey with HP, keep in mind that you are not able to download bios' if you don't have an active contract, this may be a showstopper if you're trying to install a newer O/S because of incompatibility issues.
Anyway do you research before nuking the server and regretting it ;-)
