Windows 7 Backup and Restore Fails with Error 80042302
When I open Backup and Restore in Windows 7 then attempt to manage backups or create a system image I get the following error: A volume shadow copy service component encountered and unexpected error. Check the Application event log for more information. (0x80042303). I've verified the Volume Shadow Copy service is started.
Application event log shows these errors:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine GetProviderMgmtInterface. hr = 0x8004230f, The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation.
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error creating the Shadow Copy Provider COM class with CLSID {65ee1dba-8ff4-4a58-ac1c-3 470ee2f376 a} [0x80070422, The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.]

I goggled what would cause the error "The COM Server with CLSID {65ee1dba-8ff4-4a58-ac1c-3 470ee2f376 a} and name SW_PROV cannot be started" and found the answer.

If that doesn't fix it, run MSCONFIG and make sure it is set to normal startup. If that doesn't do it, run SFC /SCANNOW to fix system file corruptions.
