Determining Project Cost

Hi Experts,

Can anyone who is a freelance developer tell me how they determine the project cost?

I had 1 client only who kept me busy, but as I have done pretty much everything for them I need to seek other clients. For a bigger project, I usually did a rough estimate of how long it would take me to write up a project scope, outlining major modules to the smallest radio button, this also helped me determine the project cost.

For this assessment and write up, I would request what I called "deductible quote" where if my client decided proceed I would deduct this cost from the final project cost; otherwise I would have been paid for the time spent on assessing and writing, but they can use my document if they wanted to proceed with another developer.

Now that I seek new clients, I have felt resistance with this approach and wanted to ask if there is something else or...?

I am talking about here a multi-month or multi-year development projects.

Thank you

if you are planning to develop an information system, you should first create a model of what you want to develop.

here is an article with an overview on how to get started:

before you start, you have to determine what type of system you want to develop, otherwise, estimating cost is a shot in the dark.
