Windows license in vsphere
I am having problem of understanding the new windows license, hope someone will explain the way it works.
We have two sites with 2 esxi hosts at each site. Each Esxi server has dual cpu with 12 cores. In addition to this, we have one physical server for Domain Controller at each site.
I would appreciate if some one explain how the new license works on each site.

I believe you need TWO standard licenses to cover that many cores on TWO VMs. I don't believe it matters how many cores you assign to the VMs, the hardware is what matters. Again, use the tool I linked to. Or call Microsoft. I'll repeat:

In 2012 Sockets DO matter, cores don't. 2012 supports 2 Sockets per license with no limit on the number of cores. In 2016 it's 2 sockets per license, 8 cores per socket for a single, initial license.

or Can I just buy 2x8? ,
If I run windows 2012 as standalone on a physical server with 2x8 cores, Should I have to buy 2x8 core license? if so then I will be better off moving everything to VM to save the money?
