How do I fix problems with a second monitor and windows 10?

I have just hardwired a second monitor to my laptop which runs Windows 10.

When I connect the HDMI the start page this happens:
 1 very first page of my laptop is displayed
 2.  there are NO desktop icons displayed
2.   my wireless mouse "switches" to the eternal monitor and the only way I can get it to work is to remove the hdmi connector so the functionality of my laptop screen is restored.

Very strange.   I had no trouble using the same cable adpter for my wife's laptop and external monitor.

I have tried re-booting.   I have tried switching the monitor off and then on.

When you move the mouse around the external monitor try to keep scrolling it off the screen in every direction. It's possible that the laptop auto configured the second display as extended but has it's physical location wrong. Ie) The monitor is to the left of the laptop but the laptop thinks its on the right, so to get the mouse on the laptop display you actually need to scroll it off to the other side. If this is the case you can go into display properties and change the position of the monitor relative to the main display, or simply switch it to duplicate if you want the same desktop displayed on both screens.

It's typical of an "extended" setup to have no icons on the second display, which is why I suspect this is your issue.

thanks.   i have re connected the external  display which is just displaying the Toshiba Leading Innovation start page.
The mouse is currently active on my laptop which is where i am typing this.
So I cannot do as you suggest as the mouse stubbornly refuses to do what it was previously - being seen and movable only on the external.!!!!    ?????

Agreed, if my solution worked it should be accepted and if not the solution should be posted and accepted as the answer. If nothing else so other experts may be able to find the solution if they encounter similar issues.

It is some time since  used EE and the systems has changed so much that I did not close the question properly.

I hope this rectifies the matter.   Sorry about confusion and any inconvenience.
