My understanding:

VSL - Virtual Switch Link - Is the connection between two switches that are configured to appear as a single switch, that is a VSS. VSL is the "link" that the two switches use to communicate the VSS related information between the two.

MultiChassis Etherchannel is when you have a switch that connection to each switch in a VSS.

So if you have 2 6500's (6500A and 6500B) in a VSS you need a VSL between the  two in order for them to communicate with each other.  Now say you have a 3 switch and you has one more more connections to 6500A and one or more connections to 6500B.  These connections can be configured in a Etherchannel just as if they were connected to a single switch.  This is because the 6500's appear to be a single switch.

Think of a MultiChassis Etherchannel  as an enhanced VPC setup.
