WSUS & low bandwith

Hi

We have a WSUS server located at HQ, multiple branch offices are connected. Some of these have only 4, 8 and 12 mbps.
The branches with bandwidth sometimes max out available bandwidth when updating. Updates usually happens at lunch, but not always.
Having a WSUS cache server at each location is not an option and the router at each location can't do the job.

Is there a way with Windows/GPO, to limit or prioritize the bandwidth?

Regards.

Hi

Great, simple explanation.
However, our bandwidth for branches ranges from 4 to 100 mbps.

Possible to apply different rates of BITS to different branch offices, or does it need to apply to everyone downloading updates from WSUS?
I recommend that you then use the Branch Cache feature

Which means that only one client will download the data and the rest will download from it. Instead of all clients downloading from your WSUS.
Hi

Great suggestion unfortunately it's not viable, as it's usually just one or maybe two computers downloading updates and using all the bandwidth.
Possible to apply different rates of BITS to different branch offices, or does it need to apply to everyone downloading updates from WSUS?

I would apply just one rate to whole domain. It's not possible to go too slow. BITS runs during idle activity anyways.
Are your updates scheduled during non working hours ?? Are clients turned off until users come in ??
