Why did I get the file extension .xlk when I added a plug-in in my Excel 2007 and can/should I save it as .xlsm next time?

I installed the plug-in MySQL for Excel, and after that default saving changed to .xlsx, so each time I had to change back to .xlsm

But when I tried to open that .xlsm file, it didn't work, I got a blank page. But there was a backup with extension .xlk (I hadn't created it, Excel had created it automatically), so that one worked fine to open.

I had a lot of VBA, and thankfully it was there in the .xlk file.

Is there anything to worry about? And how should I save this file from now on (as .xlk or xlsm)?

I tried VBA functions in this .xlk file now, and they work fine as they should.

I think I keep this setting on, can't do anything harm to get an extra backup each time, can it?
I think I misread the question a little; with the xlsm file failing but the xlk file working, I would open the xlk and do Save As as an xlsm file, overwriting the previous non-working xlsm file.
