Microsoft Word Add-in Start automatically

I want to know how to have a Microsoft word 2016 installation open a .dot file automatically on startup of the program?
It is a template file and i am looking for a way to default it to that template.

Not quite what you asked but perhaps the right result. Create a shortcut to the template and save shortcut to the desktop.

Double click on the shortcut...

You can even give it a nice icon

Rob i am running into a problem with Word 2016. The file i have is a .dot file but 2016 files all show up as .dotm files.

So far i have renamed the file extension to .dotm, but the Normal.dotm file gets regenerated by Word 2016.
You would have to save the file as a dotm first, and then rename it to Normal.dotm
BTW - a pertinent question: what is the purpose of your dot file.... ?   Is it a source of code (i.e. VBA / macros) or is it the basis for the look and feel of your document,  or is it code and look and feel?

If it is just code, you have other options...  in fact you have other options regardless.... but they may be more involved than you want to be concerned with...
I change the extension but the properties still show the it is a .dot file not a .dotm file.

The .dot file is for changing the spacing and margins of a Word document to fit different forms so a user can type in information into word, then load various form into the printer and print it rather than fill it out by hand.
