Moving files within a usb external in Windows 10 halts at 99% completion
We are moving files within the same USB external drive and the majority of times it halts at 99%.
When it does this, the source folder is empty and the files has been moved.
The message stays there for a long time and randomly it disappears.
What's going on?
Can we just exit when all has been moved?
Help (we don't want lose data)

'#256-char-limit, This will stop a copy process from proceeding that is for sure, but generally you will get a pop-up informing you of this'
'Question: How are you preforming the move/copy?'
What we want to do is to move files from Source to Destination and not have that long time-laps in the 99% of transferring the data.
'You could try Xcopy or RoboCopy'
- If we can compare both source/destination to assure robocopy is the solution, would be great!
- Nevertheless, if we can know how to fix the Windows halts at 99% log-wait message, it would be great also?
Please advice.
answer:
Yes, the "move" process stops and displays the "too long" message thus interrupting the processing and waiting for our attention to click "ok"

'Question: How are you preforming the move/copy?'
answer:
We are preforming the move by right-click the source, holding it and dragging the to the destination folder and then releasing, finally clicking 'Move Here'.

answer:
We tried it and robocopy doesn't present the 99% wait time; maybe this would resolve the 99% wait time. However, we have noticed that in some cases it doesn't move the entire folder.
We are still checking if this would be the tool.

size? = from 10mb to 5gb
defrag? = yes (it's automatically but also did it manually)
The files are being moved from within the same USB external drive.
We thought that "Move" what it does is redirect or rewrite the tables or links, and doesn't actually copy all the files to a new location, and then delete them.
Are you saying that when we move files within the same drive the OS copy all files to destination and deletes source, is that correct?

as i said above
he did not answer my Q "what happens if you move it in chunks - say 4 of them?" instead of all together (2369)

Can you try a command cut and paste? Does it cause the same issue?

Copy works excellently, we have the problem in moving (and we always have backups).
Since this happens when moving a folder, the "smallest chunk" of folder size may have been 200mg, the largest a bit over 5gb in folder size.

Yes, we tried cut & paste; same problem.

When you say "each step" you mean per event, in our case "per folder moved". In other words, after copying to destination and deleting the source, it waits for confirmation? (not wait confirmation per file moved of the said folder?)
per file in the source folder.. once the supply of files is consumed then it will copy the directory

Yes, understood; should we interpret that the halts at 99% completion is a normal process? Thus, accept this behavior? If that's the case, should we wait the 99% or can cancel out?
(remember that is the time-factor is our problem with irritable message)

Move command copies the file(s) into memory and deletes them from original place. Then by using insert you copy the files from memory to the drive. This is how MS describes it.
I recently noticed this behavior as well and I have seen it on Windows 10 only.
99% is a vague estimation of Windows. In a background the data copying process is running. Don't interrupt it. Only if you let finish you can be sure that your data is intact.

Nobus, we did answer your question, we said to your "chunks - say 4 of them", that we tried from 200mg & up (that 2,3,4,5 etc files at one time).
Noxcho, so we should accept this behavior?

If the behavior is the same on another drive - then yes. You can do nothing with it.

So to close the question, there is no solution for this Windows problem of halt it does when moving files/folders other than use another apps for moving ?
Does the problem occur on different drive as well?
ASKER
yes
Then you have to live with it. In my case it went as I reinstalled Windows.
ASKER
Ok, there is no more to look for.
Thanx all.

The drive are new, space available is one 1 TB
Moving in chunks of 2 or 4 sometime happens or note. The problem is for some reason for large batch of files or just movies folders of 2 files.
One thing that can be is that there maybe empty sub-folders in the source location or maybe the path being moved has surpass the 256 char limit? What u think?
