Configuring GFI/LogicNow/SolarWinds SPAM filter with HostGator email server

I have a customer using HostGator for emails.  I tried convincing them to migrate to Office 365 but they didn't approve.  They did approve implementing a hosted SPAM filter.  We use GFI/LogicNow which was recently acquired by SolarWinds.  We configured the SPAM filter, pointed the MX records to GFI/LogicNow/SolarWinds then updated the destination server to be the previous MX record for HostGator.  The SPAM filter portal shows it is receiving the inbound emails but the messages are getting bounced back   "Error Message from Destination Mail Server: 550 authentication" and "Error Message from Destination Mail Server:   550 without authentication"

I am chatting with HostGator support now and they immediately said 3rd party SPAM filtering is not possible.  Anyone able to implement a 3rd party SPAM filter with HostGator?
