SharePoint Foundation 2013 Search
Hello this morning I am finding myself in a bit of a pickle within my sharepoint site whenever I use the search feature.
1. In search field, typed out "test" to do a generic search
2. Received a page that spit back the following message : (YOURNAME) Sharepoint
Sorry, something went wrong.

Search has encountered a problem that prevents results from being returned. If the issue persists, please contact your administrator.
Correlation ID: be6abe9d-8990-e0da-1e77-84 5a9f8a0b98
Display Error: The display template had an error. You can correct it by fixing the template or by changing the display template used in either the Web Part properties or Result Types.
Unable to get property 'value' of undefined or null reference (CoreRender: ~sitecollection/_catalogs/ masterpage /Display Templates/Search/Control_S earchResul ts.js)
Any ideas on how to resolve properly? My server is Windows 2012 R2 Standard and I believe we are on SP1 Sharepoint Foundation 2013.
When I went into IIS I notice an application pool was stopped which had five applications tied to it. When I started and then checked the event viewer, here is what I found.
A failure was reported when trying to invoke a service application: EndpointFailure

I don't see that anywhere currently. I have restarted the sharepoint services relating to search. I have also made sure the accounts were not locked out or passwords were expired. I also tried adding sharepoint to the trusted sites but still no avail...
Go to Control Panel -->Administrative Tools -->Services scroll down the list until you find "SharePoint Search Service"
Check if the service is stopped or running. Either way either start the service or restart it if it is running. It hangs up sometimes and causes the behavior you described above.

Good try, as stated this is just an initial step to take, doesn't always make a difference, but often it helps.

@Greg - good information. Templates don't break out of the blue, but services hang up unexpectedly. It is not a bad best practice to restart the service because as we all should know, not every error message is accurate.
However, if you have been modifying any thing in those areas Greg mentions, good advice he provided.
Good luck...

Turns out that the search service was not working because the batch log on to the two sharepoint servers didn't have the full rights to the application pool. A new GPO had to be created, the user was added, the servers were rebooted, and we have liftoff.
thank you for the useful information. Much appreciated.

Glad you got it fixed. Sound like the answer had nothing to do with displays templates or master pages gallery so not sure about the reasoning for your chosen solution...??
