DNS CName is not working properly?

Hi,
I'm going mad with something simple as this!

I have a server 2003 which I have turned off and I created a CName to point its DNS name to another server 2008 R2, so that I can rebuild the old  2003 server to 2012.

however from windows 7 and server 2008 machines the CName is working fine, but when I test it from a server 2012 it gives an error- (see attached server 2012)

and if I do the same from 2003 server I also I get an error? (see attached server 2003)

I have read a few articles, but its more related to making a change to server 2003 and not server 2008 R2 as I am pointing it 2008 server?

Thanks

Doesn't look like a DNS error to me as your subject implies. That error code is most often associated with a permissions issue.
Since this is a DC this might be the issue. Here is a link to adding CNAME or Alias for a DC.
I found this https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd378971(v=ws.10).aspx
Based on the screenshot this is a permission issue.

By the way, please see below link for CNAME with UI example.

try to ping your cname address and chect it is responding ?
Also try it in nslookup and post the result.
Ensure CName record ended with period(.)
you can also try Ipconfig /flushdns in cmd prompt and give an attempt.

@ Cliff Galiher - what permissions are those? if it is permissions issue then how come I can access it from win 7 and server 2008?

@  yo_bee - sorry the name is misleading, it used to be a DC but was demoted 6 months, so its just a file server that I need to rebuild.

@ Antonio Jr Sun (VCP5-DCV) - permissions? i know the screen prints are showing this but why am i able to access successfully from win 7?

@ Vinay P - ping good, NSlookup attached, (.) period is at the end, i have flushed DNS?

Thanks

@ footech - your second link looks interesting, do I disable the strictname checking on the windows 2008 R2 server? do I need to reboot after this change, as am concerned users are accessing the shares?

Also this article says if you are running SMB version 1 then do this - how do I check it is version 1? please see attached registry screen.

"To resolve this issue on a file server that is running the SMB version 1 protocol, add the DisableStrictNameChecking value to the registry:

Registry location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
DWORD name: DisableStrictNameChecking
DWORD value: 1
"

And according to this article server 2008 R2 should be using SMB 2.1 - https://eddielublog.blogspot.co.uk/2015/12/windows-server-message-block-smb.html
so does the above article still apply to my issue?

Thanks
