Content Index State Failed after trying to rebuild search index on Exchange 2013 server

We have 5 mailbox databases on our exchange 2013 server. Recently we upgraded exchange (a CU update) and began having issues with our email users being able to use their search feature. I read the instructions to rename or delete (I renamed) the folders that end in .Single.   After doing that we had more issues with searching and each of the 5 databases 'Content Index State' shows as 'Failed'.  I don't have any DAGs set. Can I just delete all the .Single folders I can find and then do a rebuild/reseed of all the indexes? Again, I did try doing the stopping of services, the renaming of the .single folders, restarting of the exchange server, etc. and the state still shows as failed. Any help you can provide as this is getting frustrating. Thanks again for all the great help!

If your all 5 DB showing this issue. Then you need to look into following issue first. I don't think it is Exchange issue.

1) Disk errors in system logs
2) Antivirus exclusion is set for Exchange DB, Logs and Bin folders. If not, set it ASAP.
3) Any third party tool you are running on Exchange server, check that also.
4) If this a VM server, make sure resources are not provided dynamically. It need to be dedicated.
5) Make sure you server is upto date with all latest patches and services for Exchange 2013.

Few test you can do. Create new DB and move mailboxes. Check, if still facing same issue. Post the result.
