PC build question

Gigabyte mobo GA-Z170X Gaming 7.  Can I use as my harddrive a Samsung 950 PRO Series - 256GB PCIe NVMe  and place it in the PCIE1_1 slot?  If I can, will that be better performance that using Samsung 850 PRO in a SATA port?  If the performance is better, will it be barely noticeable or will it be dramatically better?

SATA III is limited to 600 MB/Sec.  NVMe can reach PCIx bus speeds.  If you look at the specs of the drives, NVMe drives usually have read speeds 3-6x faster than SSD on a SATA port and write speeds are OFTEN but not always 2-4x faster.

For example, (and these aren't exact matches to what you have), the Samsung 850 EVO 250GB (according to Micro Center's sales specs) is a 540 MB Read, 520 MB Write, while the NVMe Samsung 960 EVO 250 is 3200 MB Read, 1800 MB Write.

I have the very fast drive but in my normal daily use , it does not appear (to me) to always be that much faster.
