Failed to send some messages Negative SMTP reply 550 5.7.1 From address.

I recently started getting the above failure messages when I use my non verizon smtp serverto send over a fios line from home and from my sg6 cell phone using k-9. If I use the outgoing.verizon.net server it will not let me post my non verizon email address as the source. I have tried many combinations of smtp and reply-to settings but the solution eludes me. I have had androids for years with no problem but something has changed.
On another note is there somewhere I can learn the best methods to get answers for situations like this. I have found the codes like the 550 5.7.1 do not help me zero in on solutions. Since programmers go to the trouble giving error number why isn't there a clearer path to using them in problem solving.

Can you please provide the exact or full errror which you are getting?
Yes, the full error would probably help. However, it sounds like Verizon started trying to prevent spoofing by blocking outbound mail from non-Verizon addresses. I would check with them, perhaps you need to use authentication.

Another option: If you have access to a windows system going over the same line, you can try and do a test using Putty and entering manual SMTP command to see where the failure occurs.
550.5.7.1 means relay denied (or not allowed) and there are a few possible solutions.
One would be to actually send using the Verizon account with those credentials listed in the SMTP authentication settings.  Your email and the reply to fields could still use your non- Verizon address.
The other, which is an oldie but goodie, is to change the outgoing port or the security settings for SMTP.  Some email hosts allow using port 587 which should bypass Verizon's trap on port 25 or others may allow SSL.  You should check with the email host to find out which one works.
It is quite common for ISP's to block home users using port 25 smtp.. There reasoning is If you have an email server then you are a business.
What email server/version are you using? You may need to use Verizon's outbound relay server to get your messages through.

ASKER

With such a large player as Verizon and a very popular android email client as k-9, you would think someone would have experienced a similar conflict in setting up the outgoing mail server. Is there some well known idiosyncrasy with Verizon's mail settings that would complicate sending from my ISP's outgoing mail server?
