Printing to old printer through Linux (CUPS) Print Server?

I have an old printer for which Windows 10 (and possibly even Windows 7) no longer has drivers. But the printer is still in good condition. I'd like to be able to continue using it, if possible. My thought was that maybe I could use a Linux-based CUPS server, and print through it, using Samba. But I'm not actually sure that makes much of a difference. Don't I still need to have printer drivers on my local PC to print through it? Or is there some way to mask it and let the print server actually handle the printer functions?

That's what I was afraid of.

Okay, so is there any other way to do it?
Depending on the printer, there could be a generic driver for windows that is available through Windows updates.
What is the printer model, etc., knowing the type of printer may provide an approach,
The cups server could be defined as a ps/PDF or other datstream that will be converted on the cups/Linux side.
I.e an lpd or ipp....... Type ......
It is a LJ 2100TN, and I found something that may help with it (http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/LaserJet-Printing/Installing-a-HP-LaserJet-2100-for-Windows-10/td-p/5295727), regarding this issue, using Add Legacy Hardware in Device Manager. I'll give that a shot... (But first I have to figure out which port is in that room... Damn, I thought I'd labeled them all...)

In the end the problem turned out to be moot because the printer was not in quite as good shape as purported. But I did ascertain that there is no easy solution to this sort of problem. Older printers will continue to pose difficulties. Thanks for the help though.
