Windows Updates are not downloading will eventually fail.

Just purchased a new PC from DELL that has windows 7 on it and I went to download the required updates pushed by Microsoft  and it will not download it will just keep spinning saying downloading and after about 2-3 hours it fails.

I went onto Microsoft tech site and they say to download a "Fix It" program that will solve the issue.

Is this true anyone have any luck?

Make sure it has SP 1 on it - it should.

Then, for the first try, do the following:

1. Go to Windows Update and set automatic updates to Never.
2. Close out, and shut down (power off).
3. Start up, go back to Updates and set to Automatic. Updates will start running. Allow to run overnight and that will likely fix the issue.

I just did this on a slow Windows 7 machine (slow hardware) and it updated overnight just fine.

Download and run the Windows update troubleshooter.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/instantanswers/512a5183-ffab-40c5-8a68-021e32467565/windows-update-troubleshooter

If that doesn't work then i would do a WSUS reset. This requires a bat file.

It doesn't say but run it as an administrator and then reboot when it finishes.

Hope this helps

Josef Al-Chacar, I have tried to run the repair link for over an hour now and nothing happens. All it says that its resolving problems.

John Hurst, when I go into the Windows update screen settings everything is disabled. Even in the Admin account?
when I go into the Windows update screen settings everything is disabled  <-- That is NOT correct. Something has gone wrong in Windows. Try running SFC /SCANNOW from an admin command prompt. Restart when complete and test again.
To expand on it.... It wont let me change the Important update scheduler and other things. See attached screenshots.

Is it a domain connected computer?  That is controlled by your system administrator?

If not and new from Dell, get the Windows 7 recovery kit from Dell, back up and install Windows again.
John Hurst, Yes it is connected to a domain. None of the other PC's behave like this.
Then I suggest you back up and reinstall Windows as the behaviour you describe is entirely wrong. I also suggest calling Dell Support since this is a new box.
Did you try downloading and running the bat file? You'll need to run it as administrator. This pretty much does a factory reset on Windows update.
Can I not try and manually install them via a MS certified website?
