How to copy .mov files from Mac to iPhone and play with iPhone App

How do copy .mov video files from macOS [10.12.1] to iPhone [6s/iOS 10.1] and play with iPhone App. I have unsuccessfully tried 'Downloads' and 'VLC'  apps - instructions out of date?

Seems this should work with iTunes?

Launch iTunes. Click the “File” tab on the program menu. Select “Add File to Library” and search for the MOV file in the file browser window. Select the file and click “Open” to import the media into iTunes.

Thanks for reference to video, very helpful.

BTW, this all came about because of local organization equipment update requiring moving from Win/Vista/VGA connectors to Apple products.

As I am sure you know, Apple's Lightning connector is incompatible with [most? all?] non-Apple devices.
