Converting Hyper-V 2012 R2 VM to 2016

In Hyper-V 2016, the file format changed and it's no longer easily exported from 2012 and imported to 2016.  I'm trying to setup a Seed for a replica server and to do so, I need to import first.  Anyone know how to convert an offline VM to a version 8 (2016) VM?

I'd love to.  The VM is loaded in 2012 R2 but that's v5.  I can't import it into 2016 without first converting it to v8 (or at least newer than v5) but I can't do that unless it's loaded into Hyper-V...

I saw that document several times and read it to mean that it can create older VM versions but didn't see anything specifically saying it can import older versions.  Perhaps I need to re-examine.  For some reason I didn't take a "lack of issues" importing when googling around as a sign that it normally works and that maybe *I* have an issue.

I'll play around some more.
So I'm guessing it was a permissions issue.  I exported the previous replica (of a different VM) then copied it to an ExFAT partition and then from that ("scrubbing the permissions by not being able to have any), I copied to the intended destination then imported without a problem.  So you're right, there was another issue, almost certainly a permissions one.  I can experiment with that at a later date.

Thanks for participating.
