Apple macbook will not count battery cycles

A customer brought in an apple macbook and had me replace a new battery in it.  The battery seems to be working ok but, even though the battery has been charged and discharged at least 9 or 10 times the macbook still is saying the cycle count is 0.
Also, at one time, the customer says that when he unplugged the charger the laptop instantly shut off like the battery had no charge in it, but when he plugged the charger back in and re-started the laptop the charge showed 100% charged

Is this an indication of a faulty battery? or is there something wrong with the MB?

the customer decided to take the laptop to an authorized dealer for testing, but the battery was not an original  so I am thinking that was the problem.  I attempted to purchase an original from apple but they refused to sell me one since I was not an authorized dealer, so that is why the customer decided to take it to an apple dealer.
