Amazon AWS EC2 t2.medium (EBS-Only) - how can I increase storage from 30 GB?

Hi Experts,

I've just fired up an Amazon AWS EC2 t2.medium (EBS-Only) instance - how can I increase the storage used for the C: volume from 30 GB?
It's running Windows Server 2012 R2.

Thanks,

Regards,
Leigh

You can't directly extend the volume size, unfortunately.  Basically, you would have to:

  • Shut down instance
  • Create snapshot of current volume
  • Make a volume from that snapshot with the new desired size
  • Detached current volume from instance
  • Attach newly created volume
  • Start instance
  • Extend the file system
  • Delete original volume (once you are happy with results)

It's a bit involved, and AWS does have documentation dedicated for this: http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/WindowsGuide/ebs-expand-volume.html

Alternatively, you can create a separate EBS volume, and mount it as a different drive.  Then, use that drive for additional storage.
